Yataghan sword bayonet for use with the .71 caliber M1829/46 Artillery Carbine and others. This bayonet developed from the French Model 1840 and has a longer, heavier blade and steel crossguard instead of brass. The Model 1842 was replaced in French service by the more common Chassepot 1866 bayonet. The Model 1842 resembles a much heavier version of that bayonet and was copied by many European countries including being made for export to the US during the Civil War. This example was made by the German company S&K (Schnitzler & Kirschbaum) as marked on the ricasso. Original good condition, blade is very good with no nicks on edge. Scabbard is has repair as shown and numerous dents.
