Original Imperial German World War One Model 1916 practice grenade called Ubungs Stielhandgranate (Exercise Stick Hand Grenade). Canister has holes in it and is painted red to identify as inert. Heavy metal canister, thick handle and steel cap robust for re-use. Could also be used with the normal ceramic ball and string pull ignition and small spotting charge. This appears to be the “large head” version which is exceptionally rare. Canister is 11cm long (4 ¼ inches), diameter 68mm (2 11/16 inches). Overall length 36.5cm (14 ¼ inches). Markings on side of wooden handle include 5 ½ Sekunde (fuze time) and UB Sthdgr. B.
