Yataghan sword bayonet for use with the .71 caliber M1829/46 Artillery Carbine and others. This bayonet developed from the French Model 1840 and has a longer, heavier blade and steel crossguard instead of brass. The Model 1842 was replaced by the more common Chassepot 1866 bayonet. The Model 1842 resembles a much heavier version of that bayonet. A refinement of the world's first yataghan sword bayonet, the M1840, the M1842 had a longer, heavier blade and replaced the M1840's brass crosspiece with steel. The M1842 was a forerunner of the M1866. The M1842 blade is heavier than the M1866, as is the scabbard. Original good condition, blade is very good with no nicks on edge. Scabbard is rusted with minor dents near the tip. Made at Chatellerault Armoury in 1856.
