Early sawback pioneer’s short sword marked on the ricasso with the shield of the Canton of Fribourg, Switzerland and numbered 142 on the crossguard. Classical “Gladius” style short sword Straight double-edged blade with sawback. Ribbed solid brass hilt with cross guard and oval pommel. The “Gladius” pattern is a unique sidearm configuration started by the French in the late 1700s and resurrected by the Russians and Swiss in mid 1800 as a Pioneer’s tool but eventually became more dress or ceremonial in nature. Blade length 19 5/8 inches (498mm), overall length 25 3/8 inches (644mm). Scabbard of black leather-covered wood with brass fittings at throat and chape. Very good condition and unusual to find this item with a scabbard.
